Choose Your Thoughts Wisely
Their invisible disability started to stir and the pain they dreaded slowly creeped in. Ugh! Time for another battle! I’m going to fight this! As their thoughts took shape, they felt their body tense up and their pain started to pick up. They paused for a moment to regather their thoughts. I want to get through this. I want to understand what my body is telling me. I will do what I can to work with what I have. I will grow stronger because of this. As their commentary changed, they started to feel more hope and their body relaxed a little. They believed that they could grow, and they remembered that they survived previous episodes. They knew that everything would turn out as it should.
The words we choose in our commentary will affect our demeanor. Some words in our vocabulary may be subconsciously related to conflict and will trigger a conflict response but if we choose words aiming for our desired outcome, it could give us a different route to travel through the situation.
