Something Small Can Make a Difference

They were used to hearing that it had to be big for it to make a difference and this always led them to believe that they weren’t good enough. Their body couldn’t handle large tasks, and they took care of small details that felt overlooked. Over time, they forgot about what they did, and their mind questioned their significance.

They were alone for the day as their family went to a fundraiser and they thought about their role. I wasn’t well today, is it enough that they’re out fundraising while I’m here at home? Their phone sang with a phone call and interrupted their muse. A call from their partner.

“Hello? How’s the fundraiser?” they answered.

“All is well. It’s going great. I got asked to travel this week and I thought to check in with you.” Their partner said.

“Oh, what about the doctor’s appointment? You were supposed to get results.”

“Oh yeah! I knew there was something, but I couldn’t place my finger on it. This is why I check up with you. Thank you for reminding me. I’ll make sure to refuse the travel.”

Hanging up the phone, they pondered on how a small memory of the schedule had helped their partner to remember their self-care. It seemed small but it could make a difference.

In life, we’re taught to measure what we do and believe that bigger is better. Without the small details that help hold things together, life would be a chaotic mess. Everyone has their own abilities to contribute in different measures and they are all valuable. Size or impact aren’t the only things that matter, the intention behind what we do is as important as the results. We work on what we can, believe in our purpose and trust that it will flow as a contribution.
