Sharing Knowledge

How do you approach an audience of strangers who are likely to have never thought or been aware of what you’re going to share? How can you deliver your message and inspire understanding? Is it worth your effort to broach this topic?

What if speaking about the unexpected is a method needed to lessen fearful and worrisome reactions? What if in sharing confidence and knowledge you are presenting a possible solution in case of the unexpected? Sharing is a way of caring, even if it appears unnecessary in the moment. Sometimes, we want to be ready and offer what we can to lessen the weight of what we instinctively know may happen.

When I decided to further my education with college courses after high school, it was at a time when my seizures were more frequent and sporadic. I had no set way to prevent an attack, but I could prevent panic and educate people around me. There was no uncomplicated way to do this, so I chose to get to the point. I couldn’t concentrate on what people might think, I could only concentrate on my purpose for sharing. I wanted my teachers to be well-informed, my classes to have as little disruption as possible and to spread the comfort and knowledge I had about my situation to the people around me. I knew there was little that anyone could do when a seizure happened, but I wanted them to have a solution and be calm enough to patiently see it through.

Every new class I entered, I made it my habit to talk to the teacher privately and offer to share the situation with the class. When this was not yet a habit, I was a bundle of anxiety that couldn’t concentrate and would likely have a seizure. As it became a practice, I noticed that when I shared my stress was reduced and sometimes, they didn’t have to see a seizure. I felt foolish on days when nothing happened, but I was grateful to have educated new people and felt more a part of the class I joined.
