Meeting the Gate

As the sand trickles through the jar,

The need to meet the gate before it closes arises.

Blood rushes like a waterfall,

As the drumbeats echo in the head.

The end line is near yet far,

Pulsing with demanding expectations.

They thought they could meet their obligations,

Yet their spectacles didn’t clarify their path.

They wanted to believe they had more sand

But it was quickly sinking away.

Could their drumbeats calm to match a rhythm with their heart?

Could their demands melt away to reveal what was already there?

Only they could choose to enter or close the gate when they reached it.

Thinking about the harrowing stress that people face when facing deadlines and working to impress, many metaphors flowed through my mind. As the heat of panic subsides, the underlying questions and desire for calmness entered the picture. Despite the reasons for our heightened stress and our need to meet demands, we’re not seeing as clearly as we’d like to think. We are the only one who can align what we do with who we are and make the choice at the gate we reach.
