Knowing What You’re After

We often hear the encouragement to know our purpose but not much is said about what this means. Knowing our purpose is about knowing what we aim for in the moment and what we grow toward as a person. As I sift through my past experiences, I’m reminded of how knowing what you’re after is helpful for focus as well as adversity.

Some of my goals as a youth were as simple as getting from one destination to another. Walking from one class to the next in high school was challenging with double-vision and a bruise on my head. I remember that my growth goal was to not let predictions of disability (that I wouldn’t be accepted or succeed) become a truth for me. As a person, I wanted to persevere and live using what Life gave me instead of being intimidated or giving up. My purpose for the moment was to safely get to my next class on time. Leaving one classroom, I would imagine my next class and let my body work toward it. I found safe, familiar viewpoints along the way and concentrated on walking to class. I let the determined action drown any pain or negative thoughts that arose to focus and stayed aware to shift for a seizure if I had to.

Purpose is something that can be embellished into something greater than it is. Thinking of a life purpose, it’s more about the attitude and morals that we hold. Purposes serve our growth and are small in the moment so they can evolve with us. Even the purpose of getting from one place to another place assists in other goals and can train us in the ways we need now. Keeping a focus on what we’re after helps us to know what not to let interfere with our small successes.

Even today, when I choose to do a small walk in public areas, the focus of knowing where I want to go and why helps me to not focus on my disability or how I might appear, and deal with the reactions of my body as they arise. The noise and energy that surrounds me reminds me of the days when I was constantly aware of danger but now my focus is on the experience of being alive in whatever form I’m in. Being grateful for my life and abilities brings me peace and enjoyment.
