As a Helper
What I offer is neither right or wrong,
For only you can decide on what to believe.
I offer you a myriad of perspectives,
Hoping to open your horizon of possibilities.
I trust that everyone is strong and unique in their own way.
My opinion will neither make you weak or strong,
For only you can choose the path you wish to achieve.
I offer you a collection of experience and objectives,
Hoping to spark passion to support your abilities.
I trust that everyone will be who they're meant to be each day.
My perspective may confuse and cause you to long,
For only you can choose what to perceive
I offer you what I think and it's subjective,
Hoping that you are wise with your capabilities
I trust that everyone is journeying with who they are in their own way.
I do my best to help, as it is my prerogative,
Only you can recognize and seize your opportunities.
I will step back because I believe in you every day.
As a parent and a person who wishes to help others, I've had moments when I questioned my own advice and how it may affect the person I help. It is hard to remember that they are a unique being with separate experiences and perspectives, and that it isn't up to me what they decide.
This poem is my reflection on the role of helper, a reminder that a helper can only go so far and how much the result isn't in a helper's control. We all want to lend a helping hand and must let our love take its course beyond us. It's a beautiful gift to witness its progression.
