As a Mother

I am here to guide as a mother
I cannot claim control as a mother

I ponder about my child with hope,
While I try my best to cope as a mother

I am human and make mistakes,
And need to be reminded to take a break as a mother

Family is the center of my life
And I stand with them through all strife as a mother.

I'm happy to demonstrate how much I care,
To witness that love shared as a mother

In moments when I feel helpless,
I observe their growth to know it's not hopeless as a mother.

There will be times of conflict
When I must put my foot down and restrict them as a mother.

All their actions and gestures, in my memory, is held
All beautiful gifts for me to meld as a mother.

I find it hard to let go or walk away,
For I can't imagine being without them for a day as a mother.

I've learned lots from children as I tried to be the guide,
On them, too, I’ve had to rely as a mother.

They are not extensions of me
They are each branches of the family tree, I know this as a mother.

When they find their way, I'd be proud and not confuse
In whatever direction they choose, I must allow as a mother.

We will always come back and regather,
Times to re-bond and remember as a mother.

They become our friends and caregivers
And I learn, once more, to be the receiver as a mother.
