The First Date

Pending the date, I wish to offer you chocolate

The big smile on your face, I simply cannot await

We cannot say that this is a match made in heaven

For we have yet to discover if this is our fate

I watched you from a far distance before I came near

A possible rejection is what I tend to fear

Despite it, you chose to accept the invitation

Now my heart is soaring with happiness and good cheer

You are a beautiful sight as I stand at your door

I didn’t think your beauty could increase so much more

I’m hoping I satisfy your eyes’ expectations

And, after tonight, I hope you won’t find me a bore

For this poem, I was taking the perspective of a suitor. I wanted to capture the suitor’s excitement, nerves and courage to pursue love.

I come here and read on Valentine’s day and find this very apt for today and for the second day of prompting for the rubai
