Finding Rosie

Upon the shores of adulthood,

The first long secret drink of golden fire.

Not yet grasping life and having it understood,

How the bar’s energy could conspire.

Since then, I’ve chosen to turn

To the juice of those valleys and not of that time.

Though not as intense a burn,

I feel I’ve matured and become sublime.

A bottle of wine of the wild orchards, I present

In the russet Summer with plump, red apples

I wish to capture her heart and I won’t relent

At the end of the night, there’ll be a gentle grapple

At her front door, I stare down into her eyes

Appreciating the glow of Rosie’s burning cheeks

This is where I hope my future lies

For, with her, the love in my heart peaks

Never to be forgotten, or ever tasted again.

Though always a happy memory

Since that time, there’s so much we’ve obtained

Bound together in a strong camaraderie

For Tuesday Poetics at dVerse, we were encouraged to pick a prose by Laurie Lee and turn it into poetry. “The first long secret of golden fire, juice of those valleys and of that time, wine of the wild orchards, of russet summer, of plump red apples and Rosie’s burning cheeks. Never to be forgotten, or ever tasted again” (Cider with Rosie) was my inspiration.

You nailed it with those opening lines – brilliant!
    “Upon the shores of adulthood,
The first long secret drink of golden fire.”

Thanks! It was great exploring the youthful perspective with a different gender perspective.
