Getting up to speak
Heart beat rises, peaks
Sweat rains
Knees are feeling weak
Voice is feeling meek
Nerves strain
Too many thoughts leak
Focus, I must seek
Fears stain
Practice finding words
I want my voice heard
Clearly
To sing like a bird
While leading a herd
Dearly
Please hear all my words
Have your spirit lured
Cheerily
I will speak to you
With what I find true
In mind
May you hear me through
No matter the hue
Be kind
I’d like to hear you
What if it’s your cue?
Unwind
I was recently at a public speaking class and thought it’d be fun to express the thoughts and experiences in this new poetry form. The Lai was encouraged at dVerse for our monthly poetry form challenge and this is my first attempt.
Nice one. Well expressed.

Writing about public speaking in lai form conveys anxiety perfectly in short lines.

Nice lines: “Practice finding words
I want my voice heard
Clearly” So do I.

There’s no form to accomplish it but it’s desired.

I can relate to how you’re feeling and never attended a class like this – a great subject for the lai 🙂

I am glad that you are praticing hearing your voice heard. It can be stressful to speak before the group. Thanks for joining our poetry form challenge.

Nicely capture speech class ideas, the rhymes work and perfectly long. Here is my poetry site.

I can relate to this. I’ve been performing and speaking in public for years, and I still get nervous. Well written, thanks for sharing!

Your nervousness is felt through your words here. I felt like I was in your shoes. 🙂

I have never taken such a class, but I know the experience and thrill of learning this.
